Gir National Park Tips and Travel Guide
The home of Asiatic Lions, Gir Forest National Park, and Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected sanctuary located in the state of Gujarat, India. It was established in 1965, with a total area of 1,412 square kilometers. However, the sanctuary was set up a decade earlier. Many Photographers and nature lovers enthusiastically want to see the Asiatic lion in the wild, as it's the only place in the world where these creatures are now found. A trip to Gir is going to be filled with a lot of fun, and a visit to the king of all animals is pretty adventurous.
According to the latest census in 2015, the number of Asiatic lions in Gir and the surrounding area increased from 411 to 523 since 2010. Consisting of Male 109, Female 201 Cubs/young 213.
The news was first shared by the Gujarat forest department, which said that the population of the Asiatic lion in Gir National Park has gone up by 29 percent in the past five years. So, the numbers of lions have increased from 523 (in the year 2015) to 674 (in 2020).
Gir National Park Location:

How to Get To Gir National Park:
The nearest airport is in Ahmedabad if you want to travel by Air, It's almost 7 hours away from Sasan Gir.Even the smallest airport in Rajkot which is 3 hours away.
If you want to catch the train then the nearest railway station is in Junagadh, And this the most taking approach to take you there. Ahmedabad and Rajkot, major cities interstate there receive trains from those cities’ railway station. And If you want to go hassle-free in your comfort zone and enjoy every moment then you can take a rental car in Sasan Gir by car rental service provider.
Alternatively, many people prefer private bus services or if there is a group then take a rental bus or rental van from a taxi service provider. That journey takes seven hours and no need to book in advance.
Gir Safari Timings:
The entry time of the park is from 6.00 am to 11.00 am in the morning and from 3.00 pm to 5.00 pm in the afternoon.
Safaris in Gir National Park are conducted thrice a day:
6:30am to 9:30am
9:30am to 12:30pm
3:30pm to 6:30pm
The Gir Interpretation Zone is open from 8am to 11am and 3pm to 5pm from Thursday to Tuesday and closed on Wednesday.
At the park reception center, the booking office of the safari is located. Only limited permits to enter into the park.so it is recommended to get it early in peak season. Maximum 30 vehicles are permitted on each of 7 routes. It's highly advisable to book in advance according to your plan.
Gir Safari Cost:
On Normal Days (weekdays) Safari costs about Rs.400 per person for Indian residents and $40 per person for foreigners. On the weekend the price is high and increases by 25% and 50% on certain holidays. Hiring a jeep(gypsy) is Rs.1000 to Rs.1500 per safari, Guide cost is Rs.100 per safari. DSLR camera charge (200 rupees for Indians and 1,400 rupees for foreigners).
Gir Weather And Best Time To Visit:
The most popular time to visit is summer and monsoon. However, It can get very crowded at peak times. You want to see wildlife in true form, then when it's hot (from March to May), as they come out to get water. The lions are most active in the morning and consider that time as the best. Weekends and holidays should be avoided due to the crowds and higher fees charged.
